If you do, the Home Flex's app handles that network and your home charger in one place, and that is the entire reason to pay the difference. If you do not, the Emporia Classic delivers the same 40 amps through a longer cable for less money, and the extra buys you nothing you will use.

What those numbers mean
Note the honest asymmetry in the first row: the 48 amp headline number is the hardwired figure. On a NEMA 14-50 plug — the only version a renter should be looking at — it is a 40 amp charger. That is not a downgrade, it is what the plug is rated for.
The scheduling is the actual reason to pay more here. If you are on a time-of-use rate, charging on a timer is worth real money over the length of a lease.
It is a wall-mount form factor with a plug on it. You can hang it on a hook or leave it in the trunk; nothing about it requires a bracket screwed into the landlord's drywall.

What those numbers mean
The 50 amp headline belongs to the hardwired version. On a plug it delivers up to 40 amps, which is the ceiling a 50 amp circuit permits continuously and the same ceiling every plug-in charger shares.
The circuit requirement is stricter than it first looks. ChargePoint states the plug-in version needs a circuit rated 40 or 50 amps and that the hardwired version is required for anything else, so a smaller circuit is not something you can simply dial down to.
The app is the real differentiator. It handles this charger and ChargePoint's public stations from one place, which is worth more to somebody who charges partly away from home than to somebody with a driveway and a fixed routine.

Read the first two rows together. Both chargers lead with a number you cannot reach on a plug, because both of those figures belong to the hardwired version, and hardwiring is an alteration to somebody else's building. The question that actually decides it
Renters use public charging more than homeowners do, for the obvious reason: home charging is sometimes slow, sometimes shared, and occasionally unavailable for a week because the laundry room is being repainted. If your public charging happens on ChargePoint stations, the Home Flex's app manages both sides of that from one screen — home sessions and network sessions, one account, one history.
If your public charging happens somewhere else, or barely happens at all, that integration is worth nothing to you and you are buying a more expensive charger for a feature you will not open. Where the Emporia is ahead for a renter
- Two more feet of cable. 25 ft against 23 ft. That sounds trivial and is not: cable reach is the specification renters underestimate most, and the alternative to reaching is an extension cord and its own set of rules.
- It tolerates a smaller circuit. Emporia's setup asks for your breaker size and offers sizes from 15 amps upward. ChargePoint states the plug-in Home Flex is for circuits rated 40 or 50 amps and that the hardwired version is required for anything else. If the 14-50 you can reach turns out to be fed by a smaller breaker — which happens in older RV pedestals and improvised installs — that difference matters.
- It is rated for outdoors as it ships. Emporia publishes a NEMA 4 rating for indoor or outdoor use. ChargePoint asks you to hardwire the station outdoors, or to use a weatherproof receptacle — which is a request aimed at the outlet, not the charger, and not something a tenant can always arrange.

Where the Home Flex is ahead
- One app for home and public charging. ChargePoint describes its app as covering both its public network and your home station, and no competitor here can offer that because no competitor here runs a public network.
- Amperage is set deliberately. You enter the circuit rating during activation, which forces the question that this site spends most of its time asking: what is the breaker behind this outlet actually rated for?
- A NACS cable conversion kit. ChargePoint sells a cable kit to convert an existing Home Flex to a NACS connector. If you change cars mid-lease, you change a cable rather than a charger.
The trap both of them share
This catches more people than any specification on this page, and it is worse on the Emporia, where the hardwired and plug-in versions of the same connector are listed at the same price — so the cheaper-looking option is not a signal. Neither one fits a dryer outlet
Both of these terminate in a NEMA 14-50 plug, which is a 50 amp receptacle. If the only 240V outlet you can reach is a 14-30 dryer outlet or an older 10-30, neither charger reaches it, and the Emporia's wider breaker-size range does not change the shape of the plug on the end of the cable.

The Wi-Fi question applies to both
Every advantage either charger has over a plain 40 amp unit lives in an app, and an app needs a network. A detached carport, a below-grade parking structure or a back fence is frequently outside the router's range, and in that spot both of these become ordinary chargers at premium prices.
Stand where the car parks and check the signal on your phone before ordering either one. If it is poor, the honest recommendation is neither: buy a fixed-amperage unit from the budget tier and spend the difference on nothing at all.
The honest verdict
For most renters, the Emporia Classic. It is the cheaper charger, it has the longer cable, it is rated for outdoor use as it ships, and it will accept a circuit the Home Flex's plug version will not. Those are four advantages that apply to the specific situation this site is written for: an outlet you did not choose, in a spot you do not control.
Buy the ChargePoint Home Flex if you genuinely use ChargePoint's public network, because one app across home and public charging is a real convenience and it is the one thing the Emporia cannot do at any price. That is a narrow reason, and it is a good one if it is yours.

Is ChargePoint Home Flex better than Emporia?
For a renter, usually not. They deliver the same 40 amps on a plug, but the Emporia has a longer cable, is rated for outdoor use as it ships, accepts a wider range of circuit sizes and costs less. The Home Flex wins if you use ChargePoint's public network, because one app covers home and public charging.
Do both chargers really deliver 48 or 50 amps?
Only hardwired. On a NEMA 14-50 plug both deliver up to 40 amps, which is what a 50 amp circuit supports continuously. The higher figures in the product names belong to the hardwired versions, which are not a renter option.
Which has the longer cable?
The Emporia Classic, at 25 ft against the Home Flex's 23 ft. Two feet decides more installations than it sounds like it should, because the route from outlet to charge port is rarely a straight line.
Can either one run on a 30 amp dryer circuit?
No. Both end in a NEMA 14-50 plug, which will not fit a 14-30 or 10-30 dryer receptacle. That situation needs an adjustable charger supplied with plug adapters, or a splitter switch on the dryer circuit.
Can I use either one outdoors?
Emporia publishes a NEMA 4 rating for indoor or outdoor use. ChargePoint asks you to hardwire the Home Flex outdoors or use a weatherproof receptacle. In both cases the receptacle is usually the weaker part, so a while-in-use cover and a drip loop matter.
Do I need Wi-Fi for either charger?
