Can I do this at all?

Can you own an electric car without a garage?

Yes. The requirement is access to an outlet where the car parks, not a garage. An ordinary 120V socket adds roughly 3 to 5 miles of range per hour, which covers a typical daily commute overnight, and a 240V outlet you can reach makes it substantially faster. How do you charge an EV in an apartment complex?

Survey the property for existing outlets first — carport walls, exterior receptacles, storage areas and especially the shared laundry room, which is the most overlooked 240V circuit in rental housing. Buy for what you find. Only if nothing is reachable do you need a conversation with the building, and the playbook covers how to make that ask.

Is there an EV charger that needs no installation?

Yes — any plug-in charger. A charger that ends in a NEMA plug is an appliance, not an installation, and it unplugs and leaves with you at the end of the lease. Installation is only needed to add a circuit where no suitable outlet exists. Every no-install option, ranked.

Can I charge if I only have street parking?

Sometimes. If the car parks on your own property line with no public path in between, a Level 1 charger and a correctly routed cable work. If a public sidewalk sits between the outlet and the car, home charging is not realistically available and the honest answer is a routine built on workplace and public charging — covered here.

Is Level 1 charging actually enough?

For most commuters, yes. Twelve hours on a 120V socket returns roughly 40 to 60 miles, which exceeds what the median US driver covers in a day. It stops being enough when your daily driving regularly exceeds that — the full comparison.

Can I charge an EV from a dryer outlet?

Yes. A dryer outlet is 240V and supports 24 amps of continuous EV charging, about 5.8 kW — roughly 200 miles over a twelve-hour night. If the dryer still needs the circuit, an automatic splitter shares it and gives the dryer priority.

What amp charger do I need?

Take the circuit breaker rating, multiply by 0.8, and buy a charger that can be set at or below that number. A 30 amp circuit means 24 amps; a 50 amp circuit means 40. Your car’s onboard charger caps it further if it is lower — the method in full.

How do I know what type of outlet I have?

Count the openings first: two small plus a round hole is 120V household, three large is a three-wire 240V outlet, four large is a modern four-wire one. The shapes narrow it from there, and the identification guide does it from a photograph in about a minute.

Adapters and cables

Which charging adapter do I need?

The second name in the product title is always your car. A J1772 car using a Tesla cable needs a NACS-to-J1772 adapter; a NACS car using a J1772 cable needs a J1772-to-NACS adapter. Getting it backwards is the most common purchase mistake in the category — the direction guide.

Can I use an extension cord with an EV charger?

Yes, and which side matters more than anything else about it. A J1772 extension between the charger and the car keeps the EVSE upstream, still limiting current and monitoring the ground. A household cord between the wall and the charger puts unmanaged wire ahead of everything that does the protecting — the full answer, with the specification.

Can I use a NACS adapter at a Supercharger?

No. Superchargers are DC and every adapter on this site is AC-only. The connector shape being identical is exactly why the question comes up — why AC and DC are different technologies.

How much does it cost to charge an EV at home?

Divide your all-in electricity rate by your car’s miles per kWh to get cost per mile. For a full charge, multiply usable battery capacity by your rate and divide by about 0.88 to allow for charging losses. Both formulas are worked through on cost to charge — we do not publish a national average, because it would be wrong for almost everyone.

Do renters have a right to charge an EV?

In most US states there is no explicit statutory right for tenants. Right-to-charge laws predominantly protect condo and HOA owners with deeded or exclusive-use parking, and a minority of states extend narrower provisions to renters — the honest version, including where the real leverage is.

Have you tested any of these products?

No — none of them, and we say so on every page where it is relevant. There is no lab, no bench and no loaner hardware behind this site. What we do instead is compile published specifications, cite the standards behind every safety claim, and print the arithmetic so you can re-run it — the method in full.

Why do some buttons say 'Check price' instead of showing a price?
