Level 1 vs Level 2, for someone without a garage

Level 1 is 120V and about 1.4 to 1.8 kW. Level 2 is 240V and anywhere from 5.8 to 9.6 kW depending on the circuit. Both are AC charging, both let the car's own onboard charger do the conversion, and the only difference is voltage and current. That is the whole technical distinction, and it is far less interesting than the practical one.

That last row is the one this page exists for. A comparison that treats both levels as equally available is written for somebody who can have an electrician install whichever they choose. You are choosing between what is in the building.

The honest case for Level 1

It is better than its reputation and it is the cheapest thing we could possibly recommend, which is part of why nobody recommends it. The Department of Energy puts Level 1 at around 5 miles of range per hour of charging. Over a twelve-hour night that is 40 to 60 miles — more than the median American drives in a day.

  • It needs nobody's permission. An ordinary socket, an appliance-grade load, no conversation with a building manager.
  • It works everywhere. A relative's house, a rental cabin, a friend's driveway. The cable makes every outlet in your life usable.
  • It is gentler on everything — the circuit, the receptacle, the cable and arguably the battery.
  • It is invisible. It draws less than a hair dryer.

Where it fails is a genuinely long driving day. Level 1 will not recover 120 miles overnight, and if that is your regular pattern you will fall a little further behind each night until a public charging stop makes it up.

What those numbers mean

1.8 kW sounds trivial next to 9.6 kW, and for a road trip it is. For a commute it usually is not: the average US driver covers well under 45 miles a day, and this replaces that overnight while the car sits anyway.

The honest ceiling is the socket, not the cable. A 15 amp household circuit shared with a refrigerator and a space heater will trip, and the fix is a different socket rather than a different charger.

This is the only category of EV charging that is genuinely invisible to a landlord. It draws less than a hair dryer and plugs into a receptacle that already exists.

  • UL 2594 and UL 2231 certified rather than a generic cordset
  • Cheapest possible entry into home charging, by a wide margin

What it does not

  • 1.8 kW will not recover a long driving day overnight

Skip this one if: You regularly drive more than about 45 miles a day. Level 1 will fall a little further behind every night and you will spend the difference at public chargers.

What those numbers mean

The adjustable current is the feature that matters to a renter, and it is not a convenience. A 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports 24 amps of continuous EV load; a unit that can be set to 24 amps can use that circuit, and a fixed 40 amp unit cannot.

25 ft of cable is nine feet more than the common 16 ft, and nine feet is frequently the difference between reaching the car and not.

IP67 and a UL Type 4 enclosure describe the unit's own weather tolerance. They say nothing about the outlet it plugs into, which is usually the part that is not weather-rated.

What those numbers mean

9.6 kW is the ceiling this unit can deliver, not what your car will take. A vehicle with a 7.2 kW onboard charger draws 7.2 kW from it and no more, and that is a car limitation no charger fixes.

The 16 ft cable is the number to check before anything else. Measure from the outlet to where your charge port sits when the car is parked as it will actually be parked, not as you would like to park it. Sixteen feet disappears faster than people expect once it has to route around a wall.

A 40 amp unit needs a 50 amp circuit behind the outlet to run at 40 amps continuously. If the outlet is on a smaller breaker, the answer is a lower-amperage charger, not this one turned down.

  • Plugs in and unplugs — it leaves with you at the end of the lease
  • UL 2594 and UL 2231 certified, the two standards that matter for EVSE
  • 40 amps covers the fastest charging any renter-reachable outlet realistically supports

What it does not

  • 16 ft of cable is short for a parking space that is not directly beside the outlet
  • No amperage adjustment, so it is the wrong unit for a 30 amp circuit

Skip this one if: Your only 240V outlet is a 30 amp dryer receptacle. This unit expects a 50 amp circuit behind a NEMA 14-50, and derating it is not an option it offers.

When Level 2 is genuinely worth chasing

  1. Your daily driving regularly exceeds about 50 miles. Then Level 1 does not keep up and the difference is not theoretical.
  2. Your car is a large or inefficient one. Fewer miles per kWh means every hour of Level 1 buys less.
  3. You have irregular access. If you can only plug in three nights a week, you need each night to do more.
  4. Your electricity is cheaper at certain hours. A faster charger can finish inside a narrow off-peak window; a slow one cannot.
  5. You already have a reachable 240V outlet, in which case the question is moot — use it.

The thing that is not a reason

What about Level 3?

Level 3 is DC fast charging, and it is a different technology rather than a faster version of the same one — the station does the AC-to-DC conversion and feeds the battery directly, which is why it is a large cabinet and not something you plug into a wall. It has no home equivalent and never will. AC only, not DC explains where the line sits.

The practical recommendation

Own a Level 1 cable regardless. It is inexpensive, it lives in the trunk, and it turns every ordinary outlet you ever park near into charging. Then add Level 2 if and when you find a 240V circuit you can reach — and if you do, work out the amperage from the breaker rather than buying the biggest number available.

Questions people actually ask

Is Level 1 charging enough for daily driving?

For most people, yes. Twelve hours on a 120V socket returns 40-60 miles, which exceeds what the median driver covers in a day. It stops being enough when your daily driving regularly exceeds that.

How much faster is Level 2 than Level 1?

Roughly four times faster at 24 amps and six to seven times faster at 40 amps. In overnight terms that is 170-200 miles or 290-340 miles against 40-50.

Do I need a special outlet for Level 2 charging?

You need a 240V outlet, which many buildings already have — dryer, range and RV receptacles are all 240V. If one exists and you can reach it, no installation is required.

Is Level 1 charging bad for the battery?

No. If anything, slower charging is gentler. The trade-off with Level 1 is time rather than battery health.

What is Level 3 charging?

DC fast charging. The station converts AC to DC and feeds the battery directly, which is why it delivers 50-350 kW and why there is no residential version of it.
