Cables in rain, snow and heat
Charging outdoors is normal — most of the world does it. The failures are boring and preventable, and two of the fixes cost nothing.

Charging in the rain is fine and always was. The connector and the vehicle inlet are engineered for wet conditions, and the charger will not energize the cable until it has confirmed a proper connection. What weather actually damages is the parts nobody rated — the receptacle, the coupling left in a puddle, and the cable that spent a winter under a tire.

The distinction most often skipped: an unmated rating describes the part sitting alone, and a mated rating describes it while connected. A2Z publishes both for its adapter — IP67 unmated, IP54 mated — which is the careful way to do it. The mated number is the one that applies overnight.

What those numbers mean
23 ft against the 16 ft of the cheaper Lectron unit is the whole argument for this one. Cable length is the specification renters underestimate most and the one an extension cable is the worst way to fix.
IP66 means the housing tolerates jets of water. Read that as permission to leave the unit outdoors, not as permission to leave the outlet it plugs into exposed.
The manufacturer's 38 miles per hour figure assumes a car that can accept the full 9.6 kW. Halve your car's onboard charger rating and you halve that number.

What those numbers mean
A published operating temperature range is rarer in this category than it should be, and it is the figure that matters if your car lives in an uncovered lot through a real winter.
IP67 is the unmated rating — the adapter sitting in a puddle. IP54 mated is the number that applies while it is actually plugged in, and it is the more useful of the two.
80A and 277V are far above anything a residential AC source produces. Treat them as headroom, not as speed.

What those numbers mean
Extending on the J1772 side is safer than extending on the wall side, because the EVSE is still the thing controlling current and it still sits between the outlet and the extension.
Read the last three specification rows together, because they are the honest part. The components carry UL certification but the assembled cable is not UL Listed, and the manufacturer says so plainly rather than letting the component certifications imply something they do not. It also tells you NEC Article 625 expects a charging cable to be integral to the station for a permanent installation, and that this cord is for portable or occasional use. No other extension we looked at publishes any of that.
48A is well above the 40A ceiling of plug-in Level 2 charging, so the cable is never the constraint. Used at 24 amps on a shared dryer circuit it has a great deal of margin, which is exactly where you want to be.
What it does well

- Not a substitute for a charger with a long enough cable in the first place
Skip this one if: You have not yet bought the charger. Buy a unit with a 23 or 25 ft cable and skip the extension entirely — one continuous cable always beats two joined ones.
The two free fixes
The drip loop
Water runs down a cable. If the cable approaches the receptacle from above, water runs into the socket. If it hangs below the outlet first and then rises to the plug, water runs to the low point and drips off. Nothing to buy, thirty seconds to arrange, and it prevents the most common outdoor receptacle failure.
Getting the connector off the ground
The J1772 or NACS connector lying face-up in a puddle between sessions is the second most common cause of trouble. A hook, a cleat, a holster or a plastic bag over the end all work. A cheap wall hook does more for the life of a charging cable than any specification on the box.
Cold
Two separate effects, and it is worth keeping them apart because only one is about the cable.
- Cable stiffness. Below freezing many cables become noticeably stiffer, which makes them harder to route and easier to damage by forcing. Manufacturers that market cold-weather flexibility are addressing a real thing. Handle a cold cable gently and do not tug at a connector that has iced into its inlet.
- Battery behavior. A cold battery accepts charge more slowly, and the car spends some incoming energy warming itself. A winter overnight returns less range than an identical summer one. That is the car, not the charger, and nothing you buy changes it.
Published operating temperature ranges are the specification to look for and the one most often missing. Where a manufacturer publishes one — A2Z and Lectron both publish -30°C to 50°C on adapters — that is a meaningful signal about the design. Where none is published, we say so on the product rather than assuming a typical figure.
Heat
Less discussed and worth a paragraph. A cable on dark asphalt in full sun can reach temperatures well above ambient air, and the derating that implies is real: a cable comfortable at 40 amps in spring has less margin in August. The mitigation is the familiar one — run at a lower current, keep the cable out of direct sun where you can, and never leave it coiled while it is working.
Snow, ice and the parked car
- Do not force an iced connector. Warm it with a hand or wait; levering a frozen latch breaks the latch.
- Clear snow from the inlet before connecting, so it does not melt into the connection and refreeze.
- Keep the cable off the ground where it can be driven over or frozen into ice. A cable frozen into a rut is damaged by the act of freeing it.

Questions people actually ask
Is it safe to charge an EV in the rain?
Yes. The connector and vehicle inlet are designed for wet conditions and the charger will not energize the cable until the connection is verified. Keep the connector off standing ground and use a drip loop at the outlet.
What IP rating do I need for outdoor EV charging?
IP54 mated is a reasonable floor for equipment that stays connected outdoors. Look for a published mated figure, not just the higher unmated one, because the mated number is what applies overnight.
Does cold weather stop an EV charging?
No, but it slows it. A cold battery accepts charge more slowly and the car uses some of the incoming energy to warm itself, so a winter night returns less range than a summer one. That is the vehicle, not the equipment.
Can I leave a charging cable outside all winter?
If it is rated for the temperature range and kept off the ground, generally yes. The real risks are mechanical: forcing a stiff cable, levering an iced connector, and a cable frozen into ice being damaged when freed.
