NEMA 14-30: the modern dryer outlet

Four prongs, 30 amps, a separate ground — and 24 amps of EV charging that shares the circuit without anybody unplugging the dryer.

A NEMA 14-30 is the four-prong dryer outlet, standard in construction from the mid-1990s onward, and it supports 24 amps of continuous EV charging — about 5.8 kW, or 170 to 200 miles of range over a twelve-hour night. For a renter, it is frequently the best 240V circuit within reach, and unlike a range outlet it is usually in a room you can actually get to.

Why four prongs matter

The fourth conductor is a dedicated ground, separate from the neutral. Older three-wire configurations shared one path for both, which was permitted for decades and is why NEMA 10-30 outlets are still everywhere in older housing. For EV charging, the separate ground is the safer arrangement and it means fewer caveats — the equipment you plug in behaves exactly as it was designed to.

It is also the difference that decides which splitter you buy. The two are not interchangeable and forcing a fit is exactly the wrong instinct.

Sharing it with the dryer

You almost certainly cannot displace the dryer, and you do not need to. An automatic splitter plugs into the existing 14-30 receptacle, provides a socket for the dryer and a socket for the charger, and guarantees only one draws power at a time — with the dryer keeping priority.

The priority order is the right one. A dryer cycle is an hour; a charging session has all night to finish and simply resumes when the laundry is done. In practice you never notice the interruption.

What those numbers mean

NEMA 14-30 is the four-prong dryer outlet standard in homes built after the mid-1990s, so which splitter you need is really a question about the age of the building.

The 24 amp ceiling is the same arithmetic as the three-prong version, for the same reason: 30 amp circuit, 80% continuous rule.

Dryer priority is the right default for a shared household. A dryer cycle is an hour; a charging session has all night to finish.

What those numbers mean

The adjustable current is the feature that matters to a renter, and it is not a convenience. A 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports 24 amps of continuous EV load; a unit that can be set to 24 amps can use that circuit, and a fixed 40 amp unit cannot.

25 ft of cable is nine feet more than the common 16 ft, and nine feet is frequently the difference between reaching the car and not.

IP67 and a UL Type 4 enclosure describe the unit's own weather tolerance. They say nothing about the outlet it plugs into, which is usually the part that is not weather-rated.

Skip this one if: You know exactly which outlet you have, it is not changing, and you would rather put the money into a longer cable than into adjustability you will set once and never touch.

The 24 amp arithmetic

What a 30 amp circuit gives you

30A × 0.8 = 24A continuous; 240V × 24A ÷ 1000 = 5.76 kW

5.76 kW × 12 hours ≈ 69 kWh, or roughly 200 miles at 3 miles per kWh.

That figure is a full battery for a great many cars. The gap between this and a NEMA 14-50 is real on paper and rarely matters to somebody whose car sits still all night.

Checks before you commit

  1. Confirm it is a 14-30 and not a 14-50. Four prongs on both; the 14-50 is physically larger with its flat blades angled apart. Identification guide.
  2. Confirm the breaker is 30 amps. If it is something else, the 80% figure changes with it.
  3. Check you can physically reach the car. This defeats more laundry-room plans than any electrical consideration. Measure the real route.
  4. Check who else uses the laundry. If it is shared with other units, that is a conversation before it is a purchase — see shared laundry room charging.
  5. Look at the receptacle's condition. Dryer outlets do decades of service and a worn one is a bad candidate for eight hours of continuous current.

If the dryer is not yours to share

In a building where the laundry room serves several units, the outlet is a shared amenity and adding a device to it is a conversation with the building rather than a purchase decision. The good news is that it is an easy conversation: a splitter switch is a listed appliance, it guarantees the dryer keeps priority, and it changes nothing about how anybody else uses the room. Can I charge an EV from a NEMA 14-30 dryer outlet?

Yes. It is a 240V, 30 amp circuit supporting 24 amps of continuous EV charging, about 5.8 kW. If the dryer still needs the circuit, an automatic splitter shares it and gives the dryer priority.

How much range does a dryer outlet add overnight?

At 24 amps and 240V, roughly 5.8 kW, which over twelve hours is about 69 kWh — around 200 miles for a typical car. That is a full charge for most vehicles.

Why only 24 amps on a 30 amp circuit?

The continuous-load rule caps any load running three hours or more at 80% of the circuit rating. Overnight EV charging is continuous, so 30 × 0.8 = 24 amps.

Can I just use a Y-adapter on the dryer outlet?

No. A passive splitter allows both loads to draw at once, which a 30 amp circuit cannot support. Use a switching device with its own breaker that guarantees only one draws at a time.
