NACS and J1772 adapters
Two shapes, two directions, and one question that decides which you need: what is on your car, and what is on the cable?

An adapter is named for what it plugs into first and what it presents second. A NACS-to-J1772 adapter goes onto a NACS (Tesla-shaped) cable and gives you a J1772 plug for a J1772 car. A J1772-to-NACS adapter does the reverse. Getting that backwards is the most common purchase mistake in this whole category, and it happens because both products are described with the same four words in a different order.

Why this matters to a renter specifically
Because apartment buildings did not all install the same thing. Buildings that added charging during Tesla's destination-charger push have NACS cables on the wall. Buildings that added it through a commercial network have J1772 pedestals. Both are perfectly good infrastructure, and either one becomes usable by your car for the cost of a small piece of hardware.
That is a genuinely large return. An adapter turns "my building has charging but not for my car" into "my building has charging," and it is the cheapest thing on this site.
The three specifications worth reading
- Direction. Above. Everything else is secondary to getting this right.
- Certification. UL 2251 and UL 2252 are the standards for charging couplers and adapters. A certificate number published on the product page is a good sign; an unlisted adapter carrying full charging current for hours is not something to economize on.
- Ingress and temperature rating. Only matters if it lives outdoors, at which point it matters a great deal. Look for a mated IP figure and a published operating range rather than an unmated headline number.

What those numbers mean
A published operating temperature range is rarer in this category than it should be, and it is the figure that matters if your car lives in an uncovered lot through a real winter.
IP67 is the unmated rating — the adapter sitting in a puddle. IP54 mated is the number that applies while it is actually plugged in, and it is the more useful of the two.
80A and 277V are far above anything a residential AC source produces. Treat them as headroom, not as speed.

What those numbers mean
Get the direction right before the brand. This adapter goes on a Tesla-shaped plug so a J1772 car can take it. If you drive a Tesla and the building's charger is J1772, you need the opposite adapter and this one will not physically fit.
The 48 amp rating is the adapter's ceiling. It does not raise anything: the slowest link in the chain — station, adapter, cable, car — sets the speed.
AC only, and that is a property of the adapter rather than a limitation to work around. Superchargers are DC and use an entirely different UL standard.

What those numbers mean
The locking pin is the differentiator and it addresses a real failure: an adapter that separates when someone brushes the cable ends the charging session, and you find out in the morning.
Type 3R is an enclosure classification for outdoor use against falling rain. Together with IP54 it describes an adapter meant to stay connected outside, not one meant to be sheltered.
19.2 kW is the theoretical AC ceiling of the standard, not a speed you will see. No residential circuit a renter can reach produces it.

What those numbers mean
Most public and workplace AC charging in the US is still J1772, and most Teslas ship without an adapter for it. This is the part that fills that gap, and it lives in the frunk.
IP67 is the strongest ingress rating of any adapter here — dust tight and rated for temporary immersion rather than just spray. That is the specification to want for something left connected outdoors overnight, though it is still worth keeping the coupling out of standing water.
80A is roughly double what any Level 2 AC station will hand you, so the adapter is never the limiting factor in the chain. The built-in temperature monitoring is the more meaningful feature: it is watching the connection you are not.

What those numbers mean
This is the cheapest item on the site and the one most likely to save you the price of something else. An adapter in a shared garage is small, generic and worth real money secondhand.
The mechanism is worth understanding because it is not a padlock. The ring holds the adapter captive on the charging handle, and the thing actually doing the securing is your car's own charge-port lock — which is already engaged while the car is locked. That means there is no extra key to carry and nothing extra to unlock, but it also means the protection ends the moment you unlock the car.
The manufacturer does not publish a lock mechanism type or a security rating, so we are not going to imply one. Treat it as a deterrent against somebody opportunistic walking past, not a defense against tools.

Adapters do not make charging slower
This is a persistent worry and it is unfounded at residential power levels. The adapters above are rated from 48 to 80 amps against a home supply that will never exceed 40. The adapter is copper and contacts; it is not a converter and it does not throttle anything. If home charging feels slow the cause is the circuit or the car — what amp rating you need works through where the real ceiling is.
The one thing an adapter cannot do

An adapter is small, generic, valuable secondhand, and left connected unattended for eight hours at a time in a place other people walk through. In a private garage that is nothing to think about. In a shared apartment structure, a few dollars of locking ring is cheap insurance against losing both the part and the night's charging.

Questions people actually ask
Which EV charging adapter do I need?
Name your car's inlet first, then the cable you want to use. A J1772 car using a Tesla cable needs a NACS-to-J1772 adapter. A NACS car using a J1772 cable needs a J1772-to-NACS adapter. Matching pairs need nothing.
Do charging adapters slow charging down?
No. Residential AC charging tops out around 40 amps and these adapters are rated from 48 to 80. The adapter is a passive connection, not a converter.
Can I use a NACS adapter at a Supercharger?
Not with the AC adapters on this page. Superchargers are DC and use different standards. The connector shape being the same is the reason this question exists, and it is the reason it catches people out.
Are cheap unlisted adapters a problem?
They carry full charging current for hours at a time through a connection you are not watching. UL 2251 or UL 2252 certification, with a published certificate number, is what separates a component from a shape.
