A NEMA 14-50 is a 50 amp, 240V, four-wire receptacle, and it supports 40 amps of continuous EV charging — around 9.6 kW, or roughly 30 miles of range per hour. That is the ceiling for plug-in charging, and reaching one is the single best outcome available to a renter who is not having electrical work done.

Where they actually turn up in rentals

  • Behind an electric range, in units with an electric cooker. Usually not reachable from a parking space, but worth knowing about.
  • RV pads and hookups, which are common on older multi-family properties, at rural rentals and beside detached buildings.
  • Workshop and welder positions in shared garages and outbuildings, sometimes as NEMA 6-50 instead.
  • Previously-installed EV outlets, left behind by a prior tenant who paid for the work. More common than people expect — ask.
  • Some newer buildings' parking structures, where a 14-50 was installed for exactly this purpose without a charger fitted.

That fourth item is worth pursuing specifically. If a previous resident had an EV, there may already be a suitable receptacle in the parking area, and nobody at the leasing office will volunteer it because nobody there thinks of it as a feature.

What those numbers mean

9.6 kW is the ceiling this unit can deliver, not what your car will take. A vehicle with a 7.2 kW onboard charger draws 7.2 kW from it and no more, and that is a car limitation no charger fixes.

The 16 ft cable is the number to check before anything else. Measure from the outlet to where your charge port sits when the car is parked as it will actually be parked, not as you would like to park it. Sixteen feet disappears faster than people expect once it has to route around a wall.

A 40 amp unit needs a 50 amp circuit behind the outlet to run at 40 amps continuously. If the outlet is on a smaller breaker, the answer is a lower-amperage charger, not this one turned down.

What those numbers mean

23 ft against the 16 ft of the cheaper Lectron unit is the whole argument for this one. Cable length is the specification renters underestimate most and the one an extension cable is the worst way to fix.

IP66 means the housing tolerates jets of water. Read that as permission to leave the unit outdoors, not as permission to leave the outlet it plugs into exposed.

The manufacturer's 38 miles per hour figure assumes a car that can accept the full 9.6 kW. Halve your car's onboard charger rating and you halve that number.

What those numbers mean

Note the honest asymmetry in the first row: the 48 amp headline number is the hardwired figure. On a NEMA 14-50 plug — the only version a renter should be looking at — it is a 40 amp charger. That is not a downgrade, it is what the plug is rated for.

The scheduling is the actual reason to pay more here. If you are on a time-of-use rate, charging on a timer is worth real money over the length of a lease.

It is a wall-mount form factor with a plug on it. You can hang it on a hook or leave it in the trunk; nothing about it requires a bracket screwed into the landlord's drywall.

Skip this one if: Your electricity costs the same at every hour and there is no Wi-Fi where you park. You would be paying for a feature set you cannot reach or use.

Checks before the first eight-hour session

  1. Confirm the breaker is 50 amps. A 14-50 receptacle on a 40 amp circuit exists, particularly at RV pads and in DIY installations, and it means setting the charger to 32 amps rather than 40.
  2. Check the receptacle is a good one. 14-50s installed cheaply are a known weak point: the load is high and continuous, and a poorly made receptacle is where heat shows up. A plug that goes in loosely is a bad sign.
  3. Check for GFCI protection. Newer installations of a 14-50 in many locations require it. Some EVSE and GFCI combinations produce nuisance trips, which is annoying rather than dangerous and is worth knowing about before you conclude something is broken.
  4. Feel the plug after an hour. Warm is expected. Hot is a stop signal, every time.

From 40 amps to miles per hour

240V × 40A ÷ 1000 = 9.6 kW, then kW × your car's miles per kWh

9.6 kW × 3.3 miles/kWh ≈ 32 miles per hour. Twelve hours ≈ 380 miles.

Which charger to buy for it

Any plug-in 40 amp unit will do the electrical job, so choose on the things that differ: cable length first, then enclosure rating if it lives outdoors, then scheduling if your electricity rate varies by hour. The Level 2 roundup ranks them on exactly that.

One genuine argument for an adjustable unit even here: if you move, the next building may have a 30 amp dryer outlet instead, and an adjustable charger survives that. A fixed 40 amp unit does not.

If the outlet exists but is out of reach

That is the common disappointment — a 14-50 in a laundry room forty feet from the parking bay. Buy the longest-cable charger you can before you consider an extension, and read is an EV extension cord safe before you buy any added length at all. The correct way to add reach is on the car side, and there is a real difference.

How fast does a NEMA 14-50 charge an EV?

Up to 40 amps continuously at 240V, which is 9.6 kW — roughly 30 miles of range per hour, or a full battery for most cars overnight. Your car's onboard charger may cap it lower.

Why is a 50 amp outlet limited to 40 amps?

The continuous-load rule: a load running three hours or more may draw no more than 80% of the circuit rating. Overnight EV charging is continuous, so 50 × 0.8 = 40 amps.

Do I need an electrician to use a NEMA 14-50 for EV charging?

No, if the outlet already exists. A plug-in charger is an appliance. You need an electrician only to add one where none exists.

Are all NEMA 14-50 outlets on 50 amp circuits?

They should be, but a 14-50 on a 40 amp circuit does occur — particularly at RV pads and in DIY work. Check the breaker if you can, and set the charger to 32 amps if it is 40.
