Your EV charger keeps tripping the breaker

Four causes, in the order worth checking. Three of them are free to fix and one of them is the charger you bought.

Start with the charger's current setting, not the breaker. By far the most common cause of repeated trips in a rental is a charger drawing more than the circuit is allowed to supply continuously — and that is a setting you can change in about a minute, for free.

A breaker that trips is doing its job. It is not a fault to work around, and the answer is never a bigger breaker — that is somebody else's wiring and replacing it would remove the protection rather than fix the cause.

Check these in order

1. Is the charger set above 80% of the breaker rating?

This is the one. A load running three hours or more is continuous, and the National Electrical Code caps continuous load at 80% of the circuit rating. Overnight charging is continuous by any definition.

A charger set to 40 amps on a 30 amp dryer circuit will trip, reliably, and no adapter changes that — the adapter alters the shape of the connection and nothing about what the circuit can carry. If your charger has no way to be set lower, that is the actual problem, and an adjustable unit is the fix.

2. Is something else on the same circuit?

In older rental buildings a single circuit serves more than you would expect. A charger plus a space heater, a dryer mid-cycle, or a window air conditioner on the same run is arithmetic the breaker is entitled to object to.

The classic version of this is the shared laundry circuit: the car charges fine until somebody starts the dryer. If you are sharing a 240V circuit with an appliance, the correct device is an automatic splitter that guarantees only one load draws at a time and carries its own breaker — not a passive Y-adapter, which lets both draw and is exactly how this trip happens.

3. Is it a GFCI trip rather than an overload?

Worth separating, because it looks identical from the outside and has a completely different cause. EV charging equipment has its own ground-fault detection built in, and on a circuit that also has a GFCI breaker or receptacle the two occasionally interact and produce nuisance trips.

  • Overload trips take time. The breaker usually holds for a while and goes during the session, often under load.
  • GFCI trips are usually immediate — at plug-in or within the first moments — and often repeat at the same point every time.
  • A GFCI trip is not fixed by lowering the amperage. If reducing current changes nothing, this is the likelier cause.
  • Report it rather than working around it. Persistent GFCI tripping is a legitimate thing to raise with the building; it is not something to defeat.

4. Is the circuit or receptacle actually sound?

Older wiring, a worn receptacle, or a connection that has been loosening for years will misbehave under a load that runs for eight hours — which is a far harder duty than anything else plugged into a residential circuit. If the trips came with heat, discoloration or a smell, stop and read hot outlet or melted plug before doing anything else.

What those numbers mean

The adjustable current is the feature that matters to a renter, and it is not a convenience. A 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports 24 amps of continuous EV load; a unit that can be set to 24 amps can use that circuit, and a fixed 40 amp unit cannot.

25 ft of cable is nine feet more than the common 16 ft, and nine feet is frequently the difference between reaching the car and not.

IP67 and a UL Type 4 enclosure describe the unit's own weather tolerance. They say nothing about the outlet it plugs into, which is usually the part that is not weather-rated.

What those numbers mean

24A is the number to design around, and it is not the manufacturer being cautious. A 30 amp circuit supports 24 amps of continuous load under the 80% rule, and continuous is exactly what EV charging is.

Automatic switching is what makes this a device rather than a Y-splitter. Both loads on one 30 amp circuit at once would trip the breaker at best; the switch guarantees only one draws at a time.

The integrated 24A breaker is the part that earns the trust. It means the splitter protects the circuit itself instead of relying only on a panel breaker you cannot see and wiring you cannot inspect.

Skip this one if: Your dryer outlet is the modern four-prong NEMA 14-30. Buy the four-prong splitter instead — this one will not fit, and forcing the fit is exactly the wrong instinct.

What those numbers mean

NEMA 14-30 is the four-prong dryer outlet standard in homes built after the mid-1990s, so which splitter you need is really a question about the age of the building.

The 24 amp ceiling is the same arithmetic as the three-prong version, for the same reason: 30 amp circuit, 80% continuous rule.

Dryer priority is the right default for a shared household. A dryer cycle is an hour; a charging session has all night to finish.

Skip this one if: Your building predates the four-prong standard and the laundry outlet has three prongs. That is a NEMA 10-30 and needs the three-prong splitter instead.

What not to do

  • Do not use a plug adapter to reach a bigger outlet while leaving the amperage where it was. The adapter fits and changes nothing electrically.
  • Do not fit a passive Y-splitter on a shared circuit. Both loads draw at once, which is the trip you are trying to stop.
  • Do not repeatedly reset and retry. A breaker that trips under the same conditions is reporting a real condition.

The version of this that is genuinely good news

If the trips stop when you drop the charger to 24 amps, nothing is wrong. You have found the real capacity of the circuit you can reach, and 24 amps at 240V is about 5.8 kW — roughly 200 miles returned over a twelve-hour night. That is a full charge for most cars, and the slower setting is also easier on every connection in the chain.

Questions people actually ask

Why does my EV charger keep tripping the breaker?

Most often because the charger is set above 80% of the circuit's rating, which is the continuous-load limit. Other causes are another load on the same circuit, a GFCI interaction, or a failing receptacle. Check the amperage setting first — it is free to change.

Can I fit a bigger breaker to stop my EV charger tripping?

No. The breaker protects the wiring behind it, not the charger. A larger one removes the protection and leaves the cause in place, and in a rental it is not your wiring to gamble with.

How do I tell an overload trip from a GFCI trip?

Overload trips usually happen during the session after the circuit has been loaded for a while. GFCI trips are typically immediate at plug-in and repeat at the same point. If lowering the amperage changes nothing, suspect GFCI.

My charger trips when the dryer runs — what fixes that?

An automatic splitter that gives the appliance priority and guarantees only one load draws at a time, with its own breaker. A passive Y-adapter does the opposite and causes exactly this trip.

Is it safe to keep resetting the breaker?

No. A breaker tripping repeatedly under the same conditions is reporting a real condition. Find which of the four causes applies rather than resetting and retrying.
