EV charger plug types, explained
Five NEMA configurations cover almost every outlet a renter will meet. Here is what each one is, and what it is worth to you.

NEMA numbers look cryptic and are not. The first number is the configuration — how many wires and at what voltage — and the second is the amperage. NEMA 14-50 is a 50 amp device; NEMA 14-30 is a 30 amp device of the same family; NEMA 10-30 is an older 30 amp family with one fewer wire. That is most of what you need.

How to tell them apart in a photograph
- Two flat prongs and a round one, small: NEMA 5-15. The ordinary socket.
- As above but one slot is T-shaped: NEMA 5-20. A 20 amp circuit, worth about a third more than a 15.
- Four openings, one round or D-shaped, large: NEMA 14-something. Count the prongs — four means there is a separate ground, which is the modern arrangement.
- Three openings, large, one bent or angled: NEMA 10-30. Older, three-wire, no separate ground conductor.
- Two angled flat blades and a ground, no neutral: NEMA 6-50, common on welders and some EV installs.

Why the 14 versus 10 distinction matters more than the amperage
Both are 30 amp 240V circuits and both charge a car at the same speed. The difference is the ground. A NEMA 14 configuration has four conductors: two hot, one neutral, one ground. A NEMA 10 has three: two hot and one shared neutral-ground. That older arrangement was permitted for decades and a great deal of housing still has it.
For EV charging it is not a reason to give up, but it is a reason to use equipment built for it rather than an adapter improvised around it. NEMA 10-30 in older buildings covers what changes and what does not.

What those numbers mean
The adjustable current is the feature that matters to a renter, and it is not a convenience. A 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports 24 amps of continuous EV load; a unit that can be set to 24 amps can use that circuit, and a fixed 40 amp unit cannot.
25 ft of cable is nine feet more than the common 16 ft, and nine feet is frequently the difference between reaching the car and not.
IP67 and a UL Type 4 enclosure describe the unit's own weather tolerance. They say nothing about the outlet it plugs into, which is usually the part that is not weather-rated.

Skip this one if: You know exactly which outlet you have, it is not changing, and you would rather put the money into a longer cable than into adjustability you will set once and never touch.

#2 · A reachable 14-50 outlet

What those numbers mean
9.6 kW is the ceiling this unit can deliver, not what your car will take. A vehicle with a 7.2 kW onboard charger draws 7.2 kW from it and no more, and that is a car limitation no charger fixes.
The 16 ft cable is the number to check before anything else. Measure from the outlet to where your charge port sits when the car is parked as it will actually be parked, not as you would like to park it. Sixteen feet disappears faster than people expect once it has to route around a wall.
A 40 amp unit needs a 50 amp circuit behind the outlet to run at 40 amps continuously. If the outlet is on a smaller breaker, the answer is a lower-amperage charger, not this one turned down.

Skip this one if: Your only 240V outlet is a 30 amp dryer receptacle. This unit expects a 50 amp circuit behind a NEMA 14-50, and derating it is not an option it offers.
Adapters between plug types
Legitimate uses exist — plugging a 14-50 charger into a 14-30 outlet is fine if the charger is set to 24 amps, because the adapter is only changing the shape and you have handled the electrical part separately. Illegitimate uses look identical and are the reason this needs saying: an adapter never changes what a circuit can supply.
What about the connector on the car end?
Different subject entirely, and worth keeping separate in your head. NEMA is the wall end. J1772 and NACS are the car end. A charger has one of each, and they are chosen independently — the adapters section is about the car end.
Questions people actually ask
What does NEMA 14-50 mean?
It is a 240V, 50 amp, four-wire receptacle configuration — two hot conductors, a neutral and a ground. It is what ranges and RV pads use, and it is the fastest outlet most renters can reach for EV charging.
What is the difference between NEMA 14-30 and NEMA 10-30?
Both are 240V 30 amp dryer circuits. The 14-30 has four conductors including a separate ground; the 10-30 is an older three-wire arrangement without one. They charge at the same speed but need different equipment.
Can I use an adapter between NEMA plug types?
Yes, downward, provided you also reduce the charger's current setting to suit the smaller circuit. An adapter changes the shape of the connection and nothing about what the circuit can supply.
Which NEMA plug is best for EV charging?
NEMA 14-50 if you can reach one, because a 50 amp circuit supports 40 amps continuously and that is the practical ceiling for plug-in charging.
