Identify your outlet in about a minute

Count the openings, look at their shapes, check the amperage. Three steps, and it decides everything else you buy.

Photograph the outlet straight on, then count the openings. That single number narrows it to two or three possibilities, and the shape of the openings settles the rest. This takes about a minute and it decides which charger you buy, so it is worth doing before anything else.

Step 1: count the openings

Step 2: look at the shapes

Two small slots and a round hole

A standard 120V receptacle. If both slots are straight vertical, it is a NEMA 5-15 on a 15 amp circuit. If one slot has a small horizontal notch making a T shape, it is a NEMA 5-20 on a 20 amp circuit — worth about a third more charging speed, and easy to miss.

Three large openings

Look at the arrangement. A NEMA 10-30 has two angled flat slots and one bent, L-shaped or curved slot — that third one is the shared neutral-ground. A NEMA 6-50 has two angled flat slots and a round or D-shaped ground hole, and no neutral at all.

Four large openings

Two straight-ish flat slots, one L-shaped or curved slot, and one round or D-shaped hole. If the flat slots are parallel and vertical it is likely a NEMA 14-30 on a 30 amp circuit. If they are angled outward from each other it is likely a NEMA 14-50 on a 50 amp circuit, and the whole receptacle is noticeably larger.

Step 3: confirm the amperage

The receptacle itself is manufactured for a specific rating, so identifying the configuration usually settles it. Where you can check the breaker, do — the number is printed on the switch and it is definitive. Where you cannot, assume the smaller of the plausible ratings and set the charger accordingly. What amp rating you need covers what to do with the answer.

What those numbers mean

The adjustable current is the feature that matters to a renter, and it is not a convenience. A 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports 24 amps of continuous EV load; a unit that can be set to 24 amps can use that circuit, and a fixed 40 amp unit cannot.

25 ft of cable is nine feet more than the common 16 ft, and nine feet is frequently the difference between reaching the car and not.

IP67 and a UL Type 4 enclosure describe the unit's own weather tolerance. They say nothing about the outlet it plugs into, which is usually the part that is not weather-rated.

What those numbers mean

24A is the number to design around, and it is not the manufacturer being cautious. A 30 amp circuit supports 24 amps of continuous load under the 80% rule, and continuous is exactly what EV charging is.

Automatic switching is what makes this a device rather than a Y-splitter. Both loads on one 30 amp circuit at once would trip the breaker at best; the switch guarantees only one draws at a time.

The integrated 24A breaker is the part that earns the trust. It means the splitter protects the circuit itself instead of relying only on a panel breaker you cannot see and wiring you cannot inspect.

Skip this one if: Your dryer outlet is the modern four-prong NEMA 14-30. Buy the four-prong splitter instead — this one will not fit, and forcing the fit is exactly the wrong instinct.

What those numbers mean

NEMA 14-30 is the four-prong dryer outlet standard in homes built after the mid-1990s, so which splitter you need is really a question about the age of the building.

The 24 amp ceiling is the same arithmetic as the three-prong version, for the same reason: 30 amp circuit, 80% continuous rule.

Dryer priority is the right default for a shared household. A dryer cycle is an hour; a charging session has all night to finish.

Skip this one if: Your building predates the four-prong standard and the laundry outlet has three prongs. That is a NEMA 10-30 and needs the three-prong splitter instead.

The two lookalike pairs that cause wrong purchases

NEMA 14-30 versus NEMA 14-50

Both have four openings and both are found in laundry and kitchen positions. The 14-50 is physically larger and its two flat blades angle away from each other; the 14-30's are closer to parallel. Getting this wrong means buying a 40 amp charger for a 30 amp circuit, which is the most expensive version of this mistake.

NEMA 10-30 versus NEMA 14-30

Three openings versus four, so it is easy once you count — but people frequently do not count, because both are "the dryer outlet." The difference is a separate ground conductor and it changes which splitter you buy. NEMA 10-30 in older buildings covers what else changes.

One thing to check that is not the shape

The condition. Discoloration around a slot, a plug that goes in loosely, a faceplate that is warm to the touch after normal use, or any smell of hot plastic — those are reasons to stop and report it rather than to plug in a load that will run for eight hours. That check is free and it is the one that actually prevents trouble.

Questions people actually ask

How do I know what type of outlet I have?

Count the openings first: two small plus a round hole is 120V household; three large is a three-wire 240V outlet; four large is a modern four-wire 240V outlet. Then use the shapes of the openings to narrow it further, and include something for scale in the photograph.

What is the difference between NEMA 14-30 and NEMA 14-50?

The 14-30 is a 30 amp circuit and the 14-50 is 50 amps. Physically the 14-50 is larger and its flat blades angle away from each other. Confusing them means buying a charger the circuit cannot supply.

Is my dryer outlet 3-prong or 4-prong?

Count them. Three means NEMA 10-30, an older three-wire configuration without a separate ground. Four means NEMA 14-30, the standard in construction from the mid-1990s onward. They need different splitters.

How do I find out the breaker rating?

The number is printed on the breaker switch. If you cannot reach the panel, the receptacle configuration is usually a reliable guide, and where it is ambiguous, assume the smaller rating and set the charger accordingly.
