Working out the amp rating you need

Three steps and one multiplication. The hard part is finding the breaker, not doing the arithmetic.

Find the breaker, multiply by 0.8, set the charger to that number. Those are the three steps. What follows is how to do each one when you are a tenant and the panel is not yours.

Step 1: find what the circuit is rated at

In descending order of reliability:

  1. The breaker itself. The number is printed on the switch. If you can get to the panel, this is definitive.
  2. The outlet's own configuration. A receptacle is manufactured for a specific rating, and the pin pattern tells you what it is — a NEMA 14-50 is a 50 amp device, a NEMA 14-30 is 30 amps. The outlet identification guide matches patterns to ratings from a photograph.
  3. The panel directory, if the building has labeled it. Treat with mild suspicion; directories in rental buildings are frequently out of date.
  4. Asking maintenance. A perfectly reasonable question, and one that maintenance staff answer without it becoming a request for permission.

Step 2: multiply by 0.8

The continuous-load rule. A load that runs three hours or more may use no more than 80% of the circuit rating. EV charging runs all night, so this always applies. It is not a manufacturer's caution — it is in the code the building was wired to.

The sizing calculation

charger amps = breaker rating × 0.8

30A breaker × 0.8 = 24A. 50A breaker × 0.8 = 40A. 15A household × 0.8 = 12A.

Then check your car's onboard charger rating and use the smaller of the two — 24A vs 32A vs 40A shows the full chain.

Step 3: set the charger, and confirm it took

Adjustable chargers set current either by a physical switch inside the unit, by a button sequence, or in an app. All three are fine; what matters is verifying afterwards. Most units display the configured current at the start of a session, and if yours does not, the app or the car will show the delivered power — 5.8 kW means 24 amps, 9.6 kW means 40.

What those numbers mean

The adjustable current is the feature that matters to a renter, and it is not a convenience. A 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports 24 amps of continuous EV load; a unit that can be set to 24 amps can use that circuit, and a fixed 40 amp unit cannot.

25 ft of cable is nine feet more than the common 16 ft, and nine feet is frequently the difference between reaching the car and not.

IP67 and a UL Type 4 enclosure describe the unit's own weather tolerance. They say nothing about the outlet it plugs into, which is usually the part that is not weather-rated.

What those numbers mean

1.8 kW sounds trivial next to 9.6 kW, and for a road trip it is. For a commute it usually is not: the average US driver covers well under 45 miles a day, and this replaces that overnight while the car sits anyway.

The honest ceiling is the socket, not the cable. A 15 amp household circuit shared with a refrigerator and a space heater will trip, and the fix is a different socket rather than a different charger.

This is the only category of EV charging that is genuinely invisible to a landlord. It draws less than a hair dryer and plugs into a receptacle that already exists.

What it does well

  • Works with a socket that already exists, everywhere, with no permission needed
  • UL 2594 and UL 2231 certified rather than a generic cordset
  • Cheapest possible entry into home charging, by a wide margin

What it does not

  • 1.8 kW will not recover a long driving day overnight
  • 16 ft cable, and the nearest 120V socket is often not the nearest thing to the car

Skip this one if: You regularly drive more than about 45 miles a day. Level 1 will fall a little further behind every night and you will spend the difference at public chargers.

What those numbers mean

9.6 kW is the ceiling this unit can deliver, not what your car will take. A vehicle with a 7.2 kW onboard charger draws 7.2 kW from it and no more, and that is a car limitation no charger fixes.

The 16 ft cable is the number to check before anything else. Measure from the outlet to where your charge port sits when the car is parked as it will actually be parked, not as you would like to park it. Sixteen feet disappears faster than people expect once it has to route around a wall.

A 40 amp unit needs a 50 amp circuit behind the outlet to run at 40 amps continuously. If the outlet is on a smaller breaker, the answer is a lower-amperage charger, not this one turned down.

  • Plugs in and unplugs — it leaves with you at the end of the lease
  • UL 2594 and UL 2231 certified, the two standards that matter for EVSE
  • 40 amps covers the fastest charging any renter-reachable outlet realistically supports

What it does not

  • 16 ft of cable is short for a parking space that is not directly beside the outlet
  • No amperage adjustment, so it is the wrong unit for a 30 amp circuit

Skip this one if: Your only 240V outlet is a 30 amp dryer receptacle. This unit expects a 50 amp circuit behind a NEMA 14-50, and derating it is not an option it offers.

The two places people get this wrong

Assuming the plug tells you the circuit

It usually does, and the exception is the one that hurts. A NEMA 14-50 receptacle installed on a 40 amp circuit is not correct practice but it exists, particularly in RV pads and in DIY installations. If the outlet looks newer than the building, be suspicious and find the breaker.

Using a plug adapter to reach a bigger outlet

Adapters between NEMA configurations exist and have legitimate uses. Using one to plug a 40 amp charger into a 30 amp circuit is not one of them: the adapter fits mechanically and changes nothing electrically. If you need to use a smaller circuit, the answer is a charger that can be set lower, or a splitter switch that enforces the limit in hardware.

What happens if you get it wrong

  • Best case: the breaker trips, you lose a night of charging, and nothing is damaged. Breakers exist for this.
  • Common case: everything works and the receptacle runs warm. Sustained heat degrades the contacts over months, and the failure when it comes is at the plug.
  • Older-building case: the wiring behind the outlet is older or smaller than the breaker suggests, and the breaker is protecting a circuit that was never carrying this load for eight hours at a time.

None of that is a reason not to charge. It is a reason to spend ten minutes on the number before the first session, and then not think about it again.

Questions people actually ask

How do I know what amp my EV charger should be?

Find the circuit breaker rating, multiply by 0.8, and set the charger to that or lower. A 30 amp circuit means 24 amps, a 50 amp circuit means 40. If your car's onboard charger is rated lower than that, the car becomes the limit.

What if I cannot find the breaker?

Use the outlet's NEMA configuration as the guide — the pin pattern is manufactured for a specific rating — and if it is still ambiguous, assume the smaller number. Being slower than necessary costs you very little; being higher than the circuit costs you more.

Can I use an adapter to plug a 40 amp charger into a dryer outlet?

The adapter will fit and the charger will still try to draw 40 amps, which the circuit cannot supply continuously. Use an adjustable charger set to 24 amps, or a splitter switch that enforces the limit with its own breaker.

Why 80 percent?

It is the continuous-load rule in the National Electrical Code. Any load running three hours or more may use no more than 80% of the circuit rating, and overnight EV charging is continuous by any definition.
