A portable charger is a charger that ends in a plug. That is the entire distinction, and it is the one that matters to a renter: a plug-in unit is an appliance you own, and a hardwired unit is an improvement to somebody else's building. Everything in this section is the first kind.

The ranking below is ordered by how many renters each unit will actually work for. That is not the same as ordering by power. A 40 amp charger is faster than an adjustable one, and it is worth less to somebody whose only 240V is a 30 amp dryer circuit — because it cannot use it at all.

The three specifications that decide this

  1. Amperage, and whether it adjusts. A fixed 40 amp unit needs a 50 amp circuit. An adjustable unit fits whatever you have. If you do not yet know your outlet, adjustability is worth more than speed.
  2. Cable length. The number people underestimate most. 16 ft is common; 23 to 25 ft exists and is frequently the difference between working and not. Measure the real route before you buy.
  3. Connector. J1772 or NACS, and it has to match your car — or be bridged by an adapter in the correct direction.

Everything else — app control, scheduling, enclosure rating — is real but secondary. Get those three right and the rest is preference.

What those numbers mean

The adjustable current is the feature that matters to a renter, and it is not a convenience. A 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports 24 amps of continuous EV load; a unit that can be set to 24 amps can use that circuit, and a fixed 40 amp unit cannot.

25 ft of cable is nine feet more than the common 16 ft, and nine feet is frequently the difference between reaching the car and not.

IP67 and a UL Type 4 enclosure describe the unit's own weather tolerance. They say nothing about the outlet it plugs into, which is usually the part that is not weather-rated.

What those numbers mean

23 ft against the 16 ft of the cheaper Lectron unit is the whole argument for this one. Cable length is the specification renters underestimate most and the one an extension cable is the worst way to fix.

IP66 means the housing tolerates jets of water. Read that as permission to leave the unit outdoors, not as permission to leave the outlet it plugs into exposed.

The manufacturer's 38 miles per hour figure assumes a car that can accept the full 9.6 kW. Halve your car's onboard charger rating and you halve that number.

What those numbers mean

Note the honest asymmetry in the first row: the 48 amp headline number is the hardwired figure. On a NEMA 14-50 plug — the only version a renter should be looking at — it is a 40 amp charger. That is not a downgrade, it is what the plug is rated for.

The scheduling is the actual reason to pay more here. If you are on a time-of-use rate, charging on a timer is worth real money over the length of a lease.

It is a wall-mount form factor with a plug on it. You can hang it on a hook or leave it in the trunk; nothing about it requires a bracket screwed into the landlord's drywall.

Skip this one if: Your electricity costs the same at every hour and there is no Wi-Fi where you park. You would be paying for a feature set you cannot reach or use.

What those numbers mean

9.6 kW is the ceiling this unit can deliver, not what your car will take. A vehicle with a 7.2 kW onboard charger draws 7.2 kW from it and no more, and that is a car limitation no charger fixes.

The 16 ft cable is the number to check before anything else. Measure from the outlet to where your charge port sits when the car is parked as it will actually be parked, not as you would like to park it. Sixteen feet disappears faster than people expect once it has to route around a wall.

A 40 amp unit needs a 50 amp circuit behind the outlet to run at 40 amps continuously. If the outlet is on a smaller breaker, the answer is a lower-amperage charger, not this one turned down.

Skip this one if: Your only 240V outlet is a 30 amp dryer receptacle. This unit expects a 50 amp circuit behind a NEMA 14-50, and derating it is not an option it offers.

What those numbers mean

Buying the connector your car actually has removes a failure point. An adapter is one more thing to lose, one more thing to have walk off from a shared outlet, and one more contact interface to get warm.

This is an AC Level 2 unit. NACS is also the DC fast-charging connector, and the shared shape leads people to assume one cable does both. It does not.

If your household ever changes to a J1772 car, this becomes the wrong unit and a J1772 model becomes right. That is the argument for the adapter route if you expect to switch.

  • No adapter in the charging path for a Tesla or NACS-port vehicle
  • Carries four UL listings, including UL 2251 for the coupler itself
  • Same 40 amp ceiling as the J1772 version, so no speed penalty for the connector choice

What it does not

  • Useless with a J1772 car unless you add an adapter, which is the situation you bought it to avoid
  • The NEMA 14-50 plug still assumes a 50 amp circuit

Skip this one if: Your household has, or is about to have, a J1772 car as well. Buy the J1772 unit and one NACS adapter instead, and cover both.

What those numbers mean

1.8 kW sounds trivial next to 9.6 kW, and for a road trip it is. For a commute it usually is not: the average US driver covers well under 45 miles a day, and this replaces that overnight while the car sits anyway.

The honest ceiling is the socket, not the cable. A 15 amp household circuit shared with a refrigerator and a space heater will trip, and the fix is a different socket rather than a different charger.

This is the only category of EV charging that is genuinely invisible to a landlord. It draws less than a hair dryer and plugs into a receptacle that already exists.

What it does well

  • Works with a socket that already exists, everywhere, with no permission needed
  • UL 2594 and UL 2231 certified rather than a generic cordset
  • Cheapest possible entry into home charging, by a wide margin

What it does not

  • 1.8 kW will not recover a long driving day overnight
  • 16 ft cable, and the nearest 120V socket is often not the nearest thing to the car

Skip this one if: You regularly drive more than about 45 miles a day. Level 1 will fall a little further behind every night and you will spend the difference at public chargers.

How fast will these actually charge my car?

Slower than the headline, usually, and the reason is your car rather than the charger. Every EV has an onboard charger that converts AC to DC, and that component sets the real ceiling. A car with a 7.2 kW onboard charger draws 7.2 kW from a 9.6 kW unit and nothing more.

Charging rate from first principles

kW = volts × amps ÷ 1000, then miles per hour = kW × your car's miles per kWh

240V × 40A ÷ 1000 = 9.6 kW. At 3.5 miles/kWh that is about 34 miles per hour.

Substitute your own numbers. A car that manages 3.0 miles/kWh in winter gets about 29 miles an hour from the same charger, and that is the car changing, not the charger. The same formula, in full, is on cost to charge.

What we did not do

We have not plugged any of these into a car. There is no test bench here and no fleet of loaners, and we are not going to imply otherwise — the category is full of publishers claiming test counts, and matching that claim without the lab behind it would be a lie that is easy to check. What we did instead was compile the published specifications, link every figure to the manufacturer's own page, and do the arithmetic. The method is written down, including what it cannot tell you.

What is the best portable EV charger?

For a renter who does not yet know which outlet they will use, an adjustable 7-40A unit with included plug adapters, because it fits every circuit from a 15 amp household socket to a 50 amp range outlet. For a known NEMA 14-50, a fixed 40 amp unit with the longest cable you can find.

Is a portable charger slower than a wall-mounted one?

At the same amperage, no. The same standards and the same current apply. Wall units win only above 40 amps, which requires hardwiring and is not available to most renters.

Can a portable Level 2 charger be left plugged in permanently?

Yes, if the outlet and the circuit are sound. That is what the equipment is designed for. What deserves checking is the receptacle itself — a plug that fits loosely or a socket that is warm after an hour is a stop signal.

Do I need a portable charger if my car came with one?

Not necessarily. Check what shipped with the car first — many EVs include a 120V cable, though often a lower-amperage one. A second unit is worth it mainly if you need more speed, more cable, or a different connector.
