How to charge an EV in an apartment complex

Eight steps, in order, from walking the lot with a flashlight to what you actually put in writing to the building manager.

Work the property before you work the paperwork. Most apartment residents who conclude they cannot charge at home never actually walked the site looking for power. Buildings are full of outlets that nobody thinks of as charging infrastructure — and an outlet that already exists needs nobody's approval to use.

The eight steps, in order

  1. Walk the lot at night with a flashlight and photograph every outlet you find within about thirty feet of a parking space.
  2. Check the shared laundry room. A dryer outlet is 240V and is the single most common overlooked circuit in a rental building.
  3. Check your own unit's exterior wall, the balcony, the storage cage and the carport post. Exterior receptacles are common and frequently unused.
  4. Identify what you found — the outlet identification guide does this from a photograph in about a minute.
  5. Look at what charging the building already has, if any, and note the connector on the end of the cable. Tesla destination chargers are common in buildings that installed early.
  6. Buy for what you found, not for what you wish you had found. That is the no-install list.
  7. If nothing is reachable, only then start the conversation with the building — and start it with a specific, small, cheap ask.
  8. Put the ask in writing. We wrote the letter for you.

What buildings already installed, and why the connector matters

A significant number of apartment buildings that added charging did it in the era when Tesla was funding destination chargers, which means the cable hanging on the wall ends in a NACS connector. If you drive a Tesla that is ideal. If you drive anything else, that infrastructure becomes usable the moment you own a NACS-to-J1772 adapter — a purchase measured in tens of dollars against charging you assumed you did not have.

The reverse is also common: an older building with a J1772 pedestal and a resident with a new NACS-port car. Same solution, opposite direction. Get the direction right — here is how.

What those numbers mean

Get the direction right before the brand. This adapter goes on a Tesla-shaped plug so a J1772 car can take it. If you drive a Tesla and the building's charger is J1772, you need the opposite adapter and this one will not physically fit.

The 48 amp rating is the adapter's ceiling. It does not raise anything: the slowest link in the chain — station, adapter, cable, car — sets the speed.

AC only, and that is a property of the adapter rather than a limitation to work around. Superchargers are DC and use an entirely different UL standard.

What those numbers mean

Most public and workplace AC charging in the US is still J1772, and most Teslas ship without an adapter for it. This is the part that fills that gap, and it lives in the frunk.

IP67 is the strongest ingress rating of any adapter here — dust tight and rated for temporary immersion rather than just spray. That is the specification to want for something left connected outdoors overnight, though it is still worth keeping the coupling out of standing water.

80A is roughly double what any Level 2 AC station will hand you, so the adapter is never the limiting factor in the chain. The built-in temperature monitoring is the more meaningful feature: it is watching the connection you are not.

What those numbers mean

This is the cheapest item on the site and the one most likely to save you the price of something else. An adapter in a shared garage is small, generic and worth real money secondhand.

The mechanism is worth understanding because it is not a padlock. The ring holds the adapter captive on the charging handle, and the thing actually doing the securing is your car's own charge-port lock — which is already engaged while the car is locked. That means there is no extra key to carry and nothing extra to unlock, but it also means the protection ends the moment you unlock the car.

The manufacturer does not publish a lock mechanism type or a security rating, so we are not going to imply one. Treat it as a deterrent against somebody opportunistic walking past, not a defense against tools.

Skip this one if: You charge in a locked private garage, or you take the adapter with you every time. Then it is a step in your routine that buys nothing.

Making an ask a building manager can say yes to

Building managers say no to ambiguity and to cost. They say yes to specific, bounded, cheap requests that do not create obligations to other residents. The framing that works is not "can I install a charger" — that sounds like construction and liability. It is closer to "there is an existing outlet at X; may I use it, and I will pay for the electricity."

  • Name the specific outlet. "The receptacle on the north wall of the carport, third bay" beats "somewhere to charge".
  • Offer to pay. A metered arrangement, a flat monthly amount, or a submeter you buy. Most objections are cost objections wearing a safety costume.
  • Bound the request. One space, one resident, one outlet, revocable. That is a much smaller decision than a policy.
  • Address liability directly. Say that the equipment is UL-listed, that it plugs in and is not an installation, and that you will remove it on request.
  • Do not lead with the law. If your state has a right-to-charge statute it is leverage, and leverage works better held than waved. Renter rights covers what actually exists.

If the answer is no

It is a real outcome and worth planning for rather than treating as a failure state. Charging without any home access is a workable routine — a weekly public-charging stop of forty minutes covers most commuting patterns, and it becomes cheaper if there is a slow charger at work. Home versus public charging does that arithmetic honestly, including where public charging is genuinely more expensive than gasoline.

It is also worth asking again in a year. Buildings that said no to a resident in 2024 are installing charging in 2026, because vacancy pressure is a better argument than any letter.

Questions people actually ask

How do you charge an EV if you live in an apartment?

Survey the property for existing outlets first — carport walls, exterior receptacles, storage areas and the laundry room. Buy for what you find. Only if nothing is reachable do you need a conversation with the building, and that conversation should name a specific outlet and offer to pay for the electricity.

Can I ask my apartment to install an EV charger?

You can, and it works more often than people expect when the request is specific and bounded. A request to use an existing outlet is a far smaller decision for a manager than a request to install infrastructure, so ask for the smaller thing first.

My building has Tesla chargers and I do not drive a Tesla. Am I stuck?

No. A NACS-to-J1772 adapter lets a J1772 car use a Tesla wall or destination charger for AC charging. It does not work at Superchargers, which are DC — see why adapters are AC only.

Is it worth charging at 120V in an apartment?

For most commuters yes. Twelve hours plugged in returns roughly 36-60 miles, which covers a typical day. It stops being sufficient when your daily driving regularly exceeds that.

What if the only outlet is in the shared laundry room?
