Level 2 means 240V, and 240V does not mean an electrician. If a 240V outlet already exists where you park — a range receptacle, an RV outlet, a dryer outlet — a plug-in Level 2 charger uses it directly. That is the whole premise of this page, and it is why every unit below ends in a plug.

Before the ranking, one number to have in your head: 240V at 40 amps is 9.6 kW, which is roughly 30 miles of range per hour on a typical car. 240V at 24 amps — the most a shared 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports — is about 5.7 kW, or roughly 18 miles per hour. Both fully replace a normal commuting day overnight. The difference matters far less than people expect.

What those numbers mean

The adjustable current is the feature that matters to a renter, and it is not a convenience. A 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports 24 amps of continuous EV load; a unit that can be set to 24 amps can use that circuit, and a fixed 40 amp unit cannot.

25 ft of cable is nine feet more than the common 16 ft, and nine feet is frequently the difference between reaching the car and not.

IP67 and a UL Type 4 enclosure describe the unit's own weather tolerance. They say nothing about the outlet it plugs into, which is usually the part that is not weather-rated.

What those numbers mean

23 ft against the 16 ft of the cheaper Lectron unit is the whole argument for this one. Cable length is the specification renters underestimate most and the one an extension cable is the worst way to fix.

IP66 means the housing tolerates jets of water. Read that as permission to leave the unit outdoors, not as permission to leave the outlet it plugs into exposed.

The manufacturer's 38 miles per hour figure assumes a car that can accept the full 9.6 kW. Halve your car's onboard charger rating and you halve that number.

What those numbers mean

Note the honest asymmetry in the first row: the 48 amp headline number is the hardwired figure. On a NEMA 14-50 plug — the only version a renter should be looking at — it is a 40 amp charger. That is not a downgrade, it is what the plug is rated for.

The scheduling is the actual reason to pay more here. If you are on a time-of-use rate, charging on a timer is worth real money over the length of a lease.

It is a wall-mount form factor with a plug on it. You can hang it on a hook or leave it in the trunk; nothing about it requires a bracket screwed into the landlord's drywall.

What those numbers mean

9.6 kW is the ceiling this unit can deliver, not what your car will take. A vehicle with a 7.2 kW onboard charger draws 7.2 kW from it and no more, and that is a car limitation no charger fixes.

The 16 ft cable is the number to check before anything else. Measure from the outlet to where your charge port sits when the car is parked as it will actually be parked, not as you would like to park it. Sixteen feet disappears faster than people expect once it has to route around a wall.

A 40 amp unit needs a 50 amp circuit behind the outlet to run at 40 amps continuously. If the outlet is on a smaller breaker, the answer is a lower-amperage charger, not this one turned down.

Skip this one if: Your only 240V outlet is a 30 amp dryer receptacle. This unit expects a 50 amp circuit behind a NEMA 14-50, and derating it is not an option it offers.

The 48 amp question

Several of these units are advertised at 48 amps. Read the small print: 48 amps is almost always the hardwired figure. A NEMA 14-50 plug is rated for a 50 amp circuit, and continuous load on a 50 amp circuit is capped at 40 amps, so every plug-in version of a 48 amp charger is a 40 amp charger. Emporia states this plainly in its own specifications, which is to its credit.

Cable length, in practical terms

16 ft sounds like plenty until it has to leave a wall at head height, drop to the ground, go around a support post and reach a charge port on the opposite side of the car. Here is what the common lengths realistically cover:

What none of these will do

  • Charge faster than your car accepts. The onboard charger in the vehicle is the ceiling.
  • Make a 30 amp circuit into a 50 amp one. If your outlet is a dryer receptacle, you need an adjustable unit and about 24 amps, not a bigger charger.
  • Fix an outlet that is not sound. Continuous high current for hours is a hard duty. A warm plug is a stop signal.
  • DC fast charge. These are all AC units. DC fast charging is a different technology entirely and is never something you plug into a wall.

Questions people actually ask

What is the best portable Level 2 EV charger?

For a renter, an adjustable 7-40A unit with a long cable and a UL listing. Adjustability is what lets one charger serve a 15 amp household socket, a 30 amp dryer circuit and a 50 amp range outlet, and a renter frequently uses more than one of those across a couple of leases.

Can a portable Level 2 charger do 48 amps?

Not on a plug. 48 amps requires hardwiring. A NEMA 14-50 plug sits on a 50 amp circuit, and continuous load on that circuit is capped at 40 amps, so every plug-in version of a 48 amp charger delivers 40.

How many miles per hour does Level 2 charging add?

Roughly 30 miles per hour at 40 amps and about 18 at 24 amps, on a typical car. Your figure is the charger's kW multiplied by your car's miles per kWh, and both numbers move with temperature and driving style.

Do I need a special outlet for Level 2 charging?

You need a 240V outlet, which is not the same as a special one. Dryer, range and RV receptacles are all 240V and all already exist in a lot of buildings. Identify what you have before buying anything.
