"No installation" means the thing ends in a plug. That is the whole definition, and it is worth being precise about because the phrase gets used loosely. A charger that terminates in a NEMA plug is an appliance: you plug it in, it works, and when the lease ends you unplug it and take it. A charger that terminates in bare wires is an electrical installation, needs a licensed electrician in most jurisdictions, and belongs to the building the moment it is fitted.
Every product below is the first kind. They are ranked by how many renters they will actually work for, not by power output — a 40 amp charger you cannot plug in anywhere is worth less than a 15 amp one you can.
How these were chosen
- It must plug in. Anything hardwired is disqualified outright, however good it is.
- It must carry a safety listing — UL, ETL or cETLus — for the standard that applies to it. For charging equipment that is UL 2594 and UL 2231; for couplers it is UL 2251 or UL 2252.
- Its published specifications must be findable. Every figure in the tables below links to where it came from. Where a manufacturer does not publish something, we say so rather than estimating it.
- We have not used any of it. There is no test bench here. What we do instead is written down in full, including the arithmetic.

#1 · Not knowing your outlet yet

What those numbers mean
The adjustable current is the feature that matters to a renter, and it is not a convenience. A 30 amp dryer circuit legally supports 24 amps of continuous EV load; a unit that can be set to 24 amps can use that circuit, and a fixed 40 amp unit cannot.
25 ft of cable is nine feet more than the common 16 ft, and nine feet is frequently the difference between reaching the car and not.
IP67 and a UL Type 4 enclosure describe the unit's own weather tolerance. They say nothing about the outlet it plugs into, which is usually the part that is not weather-rated.

Skip this one if: You know exactly which outlet you have, it is not changing, and you would rather put the money into a longer cable than into adjustability you will set once and never touch.

#2 · An ordinary wall socket

What those numbers mean
1.8 kW sounds trivial next to 9.6 kW, and for a road trip it is. For a commute it usually is not: the average US driver covers well under 45 miles a day, and this replaces that overnight while the car sits anyway.
The honest ceiling is the socket, not the cable. A 15 amp household circuit shared with a refrigerator and a space heater will trip, and the fix is a different socket rather than a different charger.
This is the only category of EV charging that is genuinely invisible to a landlord. It draws less than a hair dryer and plugs into a receptacle that already exists.

What it does not
- 1.8 kW will not recover a long driving day overnight

Skip this one if: You regularly drive more than about 45 miles a day. Level 1 will fall a little further behind every night and you will spend the difference at public chargers.

#3 · An older 3-prong dryer outlet

What those numbers mean
24A is the number to design around, and it is not the manufacturer being cautious. A 30 amp circuit supports 24 amps of continuous load under the 80% rule, and continuous is exactly what EV charging is.
Automatic switching is what makes this a device rather than a Y-splitter. Both loads on one 30 amp circuit at once would trip the breaker at best; the switch guarantees only one draws at a time.
The integrated 24A breaker is the part that earns the trust. It means the splitter protects the circuit itself instead of relying only on a panel breaker you cannot see and wiring you cannot inspect.
What it does well
- Plugs in — genuinely no electrician, no permit, no landlord construction
- Its own 24A breaker rather than trusting the panel alone
- cETLus listed with the Intertek file number published
- Automatic switching, so the dryer keeps priority without anybody replugging anything
What it does not
- 24A caps charging at roughly 5.7 kW, well below a NEMA 14-50's ceiling
- NEMA 10-30 is an ungrounded three-wire configuration, which is a real caveat rather than a formality
- Only useful if you can physically reach the laundry outlet from the car
Skip this one if: Your dryer outlet is the modern four-prong NEMA 14-30. Buy the four-prong splitter instead — this one will not fit, and forcing the fit is exactly the wrong instinct.

#4 · A modern 4-prong dryer outlet

What those numbers mean
NEMA 14-30 is the four-prong dryer outlet standard in homes built after the mid-1990s, so which splitter you need is really a question about the age of the building.
The 24 amp ceiling is the same arithmetic as the three-prong version, for the same reason: 30 amp circuit, 80% continuous rule.
Dryer priority is the right default for a shared household. A dryer cycle is an hour; a charging session has all night to finish.

What those numbers mean
Extending on the J1772 side is safer than extending on the wall side, because the EVSE is still the thing controlling current and it still sits between the outlet and the extension.
Read the last three specification rows together, because they are the honest part. The components carry UL certification but the assembled cable is not UL Listed, and the manufacturer says so plainly rather than letting the component certifications imply something they do not. It also tells you NEC Article 625 expects a charging cable to be integral to the station for a permanent installation, and that this cord is for portable or occasional use. No other extension we looked at publishes any of that.
48A is well above the 40A ceiling of plug-in Level 2 charging, so the cable is never the constraint. Used at 24 amps on a shared dryer circuit it has a great deal of margin, which is exactly where you want to be.
What it does well
- Built for EV charging rather than a household cord pressed into the job
- 48A rating leaves real margin at any renter-reachable current
- The manufacturer publishes the UL-listing status and the NEC caveat instead of glossing over them
- Designed and tested in North America, with a stated 12-month warranty
What it does not
- Adds two contact interfaces to a circuit that runs for hours at high current
- Not UL Listed as an assembled unit — a real distinction, even though its components are certified
- 16 ft, so it is a shorter reach than some discontinued alternatives offered
- Not a substitute for a charger with a long enough cable in the first place
Skip this one if: You have not yet bought the charger. Buy a unit with a 23 or 25 ft cable and skip the extension entirely — one continuous cable always beats two joined ones.

What "no installation" does not mean
It does not mean no responsibility. A plug-in charger draws its rated current continuously for hours, and that is a harder duty than almost anything else you will plug into a residential circuit. Three things are worth checking before the first long session:
- The receptacle itself. A worn or discoloured outlet, or one that a plug sits loosely in, is a bad candidate. Heat at the plug after an hour of charging is a stop signal, not a quirk.
- The breaker rating. A 30 amp circuit supports 24 amps continuously; a 50 amp circuit supports 40. Set the charger accordingly — see what amp rating you need.
- What else is on the circuit. In older buildings a single circuit can serve more than you would expect, and a charger plus a space heater is how a breaker finds out.
What to buy first if you are buying one thing
If you genuinely do not yet know what outlet you will end up with — you are moving, or the building is vague — the adjustable 7 to 40 amp charger at the top is the purchase that survives being wrong. It steps down onto a 15 amp household socket and up onto a 50 amp range outlet, and it ships with the plug adapters for the outlets in between. Everything else on this page is better at one specific job and worse at not knowing which job it is.
Questions people actually ask
Do I need an electrician for a plug-in EV charger?
No. A charger that ends in a NEMA plug is an appliance and needs no electrical work. You need an electrician only if a suitable outlet does not already exist and one has to be added — which is the situation this whole site is written to avoid.
Can I use a Level 2 charger without installing anything?
Yes, if a 240V outlet already exists where you park. A dryer, range or RV receptacle is 240V. A plug-in Level 2 charger uses it directly, with an automatic splitter if the circuit is shared with an appliance.
Will my landlord know I am charging?
A Level 1 charger on an existing socket draws less than a hair dryer and is not visible in any practical sense. A 240V setup on a shared circuit is worth mentioning, because it changes how that circuit is used. Renter rights covers what you are and are not obliged to disclose.
Is a portable charger as good as a wall-mounted one?
Electrically, at the same amperage, yes — the same standards apply and the same current flows. Wall units win on cable management and on hardwired amperage above 40 amps, neither of which is available to most renters anyway.
